Kappa Kappa Gamma Visits Reflections

The sorority sisters of Kappa Kappa Gama from John Carroll University came by the Reflections Interior Design Studio recently. The six senior girls came by for an hour visit with Marissa and Emily to learn a little bit about life after college design basics, budgeting and Do It Yourself solutions.

Shortly after the girls arrived at the studio and all the introductions were completed, things quickly got started. Marissa explained the importance of good design and how it doesn’t always matter what the piece is or where it is from, but how you use it. A quote from David Hicks made a great impact and helped the girls to understand this concept.

“The impression a room makes at first sight is largely conditioned by the furniture it contains and how this is arranged. Of these two factors, it is the arrangement that is the most important. If pieces are positioned awkwardly, the fact that they are the finest antiques will make no difference, and the room will still look static and indifferent. It is not what you own, but how you use it.

After they had the design basics down it was time for the Do It Yourself tips. The girls loved these simple solutions that a lot of first time apartment renters face. How to utilize the space with what they have and make it work. Marissa and Emily gave advice from simple wallpapering tricks (like wallpapering the back of a closet or bookcase for a dramatic impact), to using storage with character so that it is not only functional but also aesthetically pleasing. Most importantly they told the girls to purchase the necessities and if you are going to indulge make sure it is a practical and functional piece that will last you for years to come.

They also touched base on trends. Trends are a great way to stay in style, but they are expensive to follow as they are just that: Trends. A good simple way to stay “trendy” is with touches here and there. Pillows, ready-made curtains and artwork are quick and easy things to switch out as styles change.

They had a great time bringing new ideas to these college seniors while guiding them to make good design decisions in their future!
