In Appletree Book’s Windows:
Morgan Conservatory
Our store windows in September feature works from
Cleveland’s own Morgan Conservatory. The Morgan will be displaying original artworks, including marbled paper, handbound books, prints, and more. The Morgan Conservatory is the largest arts center in the United States dedicated to every facet of papermaking, book arts and letterpress printing and to cultivating the talents of established and emerging artists. An international destination that is free and open to the public, the Morgan Conservatory is a working studio, gallery, gathering place for the community, educational hub and purveyor of some of the finest handmade papers in the world.

The Morgan will also be bringing dried kozo fiber from their urban garden. The Morgan’s Sam Caraboolad Garden is a kozo (paper mulberry tree) grove dedicated to growing kozo fiber that is used traditionally in Asian papermaking. By growing the raw material onsite, they not only avoid the sizeable expense of importing the fibers from Asia, but also create a self-sustaining cycle of papermaking.

On Appletree Book’s Walls:
Jessica Coven Stenson and
William A. Stenson, aka, Andy
Our artists this month are
Jessica Coven Stenson and
William A. (Andy) Stenson.
Jessica and Andy Stenson live in Shaker Heights. They own and operate a wood-working business that focuses on food-related wood products, salad bowls, cutting boards, and wooden spoons. They sell their handcrafted products year round at the Shaker Square farmers market.

When Jessica is not carving spoons, she draws flowers from life, photos, and memory. Using all kinds materials, chalk pastel, makeup, bits of found broken jewelry, Jessica, seeks to make the ephemeral gesture of giving flowers a little less fleeting.

Andy’s intention as an artist has always been to create beauty. He uses symmetry and geometry to reference the natural world with both his imagery and use of wood while exercising skilled craftsmanship.
